Anyone who is taking their french holiday in the Dordogne region will get the chance to experience the wonders of science next week, as science advocate group Creascience has announced it will be taking a ‘festival of science’ on tour throughout the area.
From the 16th to the 22nd of November, Creascience has organised exhibitions in public spaces throughout Dordogne. The festival is to mark the bi-centennary of Darwin’s ‘Evolution of The Species’ this year.
Its first event will be a screening of the movies Darwin and the Science of Evolution and Species of the Species, British productions that will be accompanied by French subtitles.
But as well as exploring the landmark findings and legacy of the world’s most famous and controversial biologist, the festival aims to demonstrate the significance of other branches of science.
A Creascience spokesperson told Sudouest.com that the goal was “to give children a taste of knowlege, of research, of how to better observe the world around them”.
Foremost among these will be Astronomy; Creascience’s “Caravan to the Stars” will reportedly be travelling throughout the departement for the entire week. It will bring a mobile planetarium to the villages and towns it visits.
But Bergerac, in the west of Dordogne, will be the main site for the festival’s activities that have been announced so far. On the 19th of November at 2pm and 5pm, local college Prevert will give the presentation “space issues”. On the market Wednesday (November 18th), the astronomy club Milky Way Chenaud will be hosting a safe observation of the sun between 10am and mid-day.
All events will be free to the public, whether local or tourists.
