There are few better days to be in France than 21 June. For this one day of the year, musicians of all ages and abilities take to the streets to celebrate the Fête de la Musique, and to share in the joy of live music.
From impromptu jam sessions on street corners, through neighbourhood salsa parties and huge open-air concerts – every taste is catered for, and the fun goes on long into the warm summer night.
This year’s festival has already passed, but visitors to the Dordogne this summer needn’t be disappointed. The region boasts a renowned music festival of its own, and the good news is that it lasts nearly two months.
The Festival du Périgord Noir was the brainchild of a group of French music-lovers, who in 1983 hatched an ambitious plan to stage a music festival in the heart of the Périgord Noir region.
France was truly buzzing with artistic creativity at the time, so the friends’ vision was to invite the best of the region’s musical talent and share their passion with the Périgord locals. Little by little, they built up a reputation and established a network of respected musicians. They also gave younger musicians the chance to perform live in front of the public.
The festival now attracts huge numbers of visitors every year and showcases musical talent from France and around the world. This year’s edition runs from 24 June until 11 September, and promises to be one of the best yet. The theme this year is Voyages imaginaires (imaginary journeys), and festival-goers will be given a taste of Périgord Noir’s enchanting heritage.
If you’re planning a holiday in the Dordogne this summer and feel like soaking up some of the region’s culture, the Festival du Périgord Noir is well worth a visit. Send an email to contact@festivalduperigordnoir.fr for more information and ticket prices.
